Overview
St Andrew’s is a historic and iconic building that is well-known to Moffat residents and visitors alike. At present, the building is mainly used for worship on a Sunday but recently we hosted numerous very successful concerts. The building is one of the biggest spaces in the area and we believe that going forward there is huge potential to offer the facility for the use of the wider community. To enable this to happen, we are planning a programme of redevelopment of the building.
WHY CHANGE, WHY NOW?
Being an older building, the church requires significant modernization to its heating system and this necessary work presents an excellent opportunity to make the building more accessible, comfortable, flexible, environmentally friendly and available for community multi-use.
The Church of Scotland advises that, in order to avoid the risk of closure, buildings should be used extensively for the benefit of the community, not just on Sundays.
WHAT WILL WE CHANGE?
• Install a new eco heating system
• Create a level floor and new seating for better accessibility and flexibility
• Upgrade insulation
• Install new accessible toilets
• Update audio – visual equipment for inclusivity
HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?
The overall cost of the work is estimated at £698,000. The kirk session – who are the trustees of the building – have committed £400,000 of church funds, the majority of which came from a generous legacy to the project. The balance will need to be funded through grant applications and fund-raising.
